Published by Ratalaika Games, They Came From The Sky 2 is a fun, score based 2D side scrolling action game that reminds me of arcade classic Rampage only with aliens instead of giant monsters.
Playing as an alien in a side shuffling walker, it is your job to kill, abduct, and destroy as many humans and their property as possible before they eventually overpower you. Each action is set to a form of checks and balances. For example, the machine gun can shoot distant targets but overheats easily. The vessel can hop but it takes time. Even moving left and right is rather slow. Power-ups are available but they need to shot down then collected within a limited time. So even though you are armed with much stronger firepower than the tiny humans, the controllable alien is still very vulnerable.
Every run is different than the last and the player can grow slightly stronger with each attempt. Each innocent person you suck into your craft, the potential to unlock more abilities increases. However, abducting humans requires proximity which means closer to danger. So again, checks and balances.
Even without local and online leaderboards, this action game is rather addicting. It is simple but has depth for those wanting to maximize the score. The 2D pixel art is stupidly charming and the soundtrack is also exceptional. Achievement hunters will also want to take note as most Gamerscore can be unlocked in a short amount of time. There are also a ton of abilities to unlock and secrets to find (although they do not actually do anything). So there is plenty of quality replay value.
They Came From The Sky 2 is one of those perfect games that provides a satisfying experience with a single three minute run, or if you wanted to grind for an hour to unlock that next ability. Not having online leaderboards is an unfortunate missed opportunity but there is still a lot of addictive gameplay in this charming action title.
