Master Wii-to-DS Linking Communication List

Posted on November 8, 2026August 26, 2026 by squallsnake

There were about 30 Wii games/apps that could directly communicate with the Nintendo DS. Whether it was simply swapping data between the console and the handheld to unlock new content or offer real-time gameplay, this wireless connection was unique, underappreciated, and underutilized. This wireless connection was basically the sequel to the GameCube-to-GBA connectivity and the grandchild of the Dreamcast-to-Neogeo Pocket Color link mode.

Since the Wii sold over 100 million units and the Nintendo DS sold over 150 million units across its various models (DS original/phat, DS Lite, DSi, DSiXL), there was a good chance players own both systems. However, this linking feature seems to have flown under the radar and no one seems to talk about it.

In alphabetical order, here is a list of all Wii games that can directly communicate with the Nintendo DS, the details about the link mode in these specific games, and my embedded videos/Shorts will also be posted with each entry.

Updated 08-26-2026

Wii game – Animal Crossing: City Folk

DS game – Animal Crossing: Wild World

Wii-to-DS communication feature – your character from Wild World can be transferred into City Folk. The items you bought in the DS game can be purchased in the Wii game through the catalog. Plus, you can visit another town on another Wii by using the Suitcase app on the DS.

Wii game – Band Hero

DS game – Band Hero

Wii-to-DS communication feature – DS players can add songs to the band’s playlist without needing to revert back to the menu to pick a song each time (essentially like picking songs from a jukebox). When each song is selected, the DS player can tap a button to read one simple fact about each song too. No cart is needed for this.

Then, there are other real time multiplayer modes available.

Wii game – Batman: The Brave the Bold

DS game – Batman: The Brave the Bold

Wii-to-DS communication feature – the DS player can control the Bat-Mite to drop bombs/anvils and health restoring power-ups in the Wii game.

Wii game – Big Beach Sports

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – DS users can send their drawn face to a playable character in the Wii game.

Wii game – Castlevania Judgement

DS game – Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

Wii-to-DS communication feature – fighters Shanoa and Aeon get unlocked in the Wii game (but they can be unlocked through normal play). A couple new cosmetic items also become available in the Wii game.

Wii game – Driver: San Francisco

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – the DS player can place markers on the map, drop 3 different types of road blocks, and can reduce the felony level by playing a dot-connecting mini game. Boot up the main single player campaign (the Wii auto sends the DS signal) then choose Download Play on the DS make the link.

Wii game – Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time

DS game – Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time

Wii-to-DS communication feature – Echoes of Time is the same game on Wii as it is on the DS and up to 4 players can connect wirelessly to play co-op (online mode is shut down but offline still works).

Wii game – Geometry Wars: Galaxies

DS game – Geometry Wars: Galaxies

Wii-to-DS communication feature – linking both versions unlocks a new, exclusive Galaxy consisting of multiple stages.

Wii game – Guitar Hero 5

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – various multiplayer modes.

Wii game – Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – various multiplayer modes.

Wii game – Jam with the Band Live Channel (WiiWare)

DS game – Jam with the Band

Wii-to-DS communication feature – up to 8 DS players can join together in playing the same song and having all the audio come through the TV.

Wii game – Kung Fu Panda: Legendary Warriors
DS game – Kung Fu Panda: Legendary Warriors
Wii-to-DS communication feature – link both versions to unlock Rat Goon in the Wii multiplayer mode.

Wii game – Maboshi’s Arcade
DS game – none (DS Download Play)
Wii-to-DS communication feature – can download a version of the game via DS Download Play after completing the tutorial.

Wii game – Mahjong Kakutou Club Wii: Wi-Fi

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – apparently this game uses the DS for local wireless multiplayer but I could not get it to work.

Wii game – Mii Channel

Wii-to-DS communication feature – import Miis into the DS game.

DS game – Tomodachi Collection

Wii-to-DS communication feature – import Miis into the DS game.

Wii game – My Pokémon Ranch (WiiWare)

DS game – Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl (Japan version also compatible with Platinum)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – DS Pokemon can be sent into the WiiWare game where they can be viewed in 3D with minor interactions. Important to note – if you delete your DS save file, the Pokemon will be trapped on the Wii.

Wii game – My Word Coach

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – after playing the Wii version for about an hour, the single player Missing Letter DS link feature will be unlocked. This allows an empty DS to be used as the controller for this one specific mini game; using the stylus is much more accurate than pointing the Wiimote. Tediously, the DS must be restarted each time this feature is used. There is no communication feature between the handheld version and this console version.

Wii game – Naruto Shippuden: Dragon Blade Chronicles (Japan version)

DS game – Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Rumble (Japan version)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – the Dragon Blade Rasengan scroll, a powerful wind attack, gets unlocked in the Wii game by linking to the DS game. This scroll becomes available in the American release through normal play as the Wii-to-DS link feature was removed in the US version.

Wii game – Nintendo Channel (WiiWare)

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – when the Nintendo Channel was active, DS users could download all sorts of content including playable demos of DS games.

Wii game – Oyako de Asobo: Miffy no Omocha Bako (Japan)

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – the DS is used to download a simple painting program in which 1 of 6 coloring book pages can be colored using 7 different colors, then sent back to the Wii for viewing on the big screen. The uploading image gets posted with the date and name of the DS as the artist. Only one DS picture can be uploaded/viewed on the Wii.

Wii game – Pokémon: Battle Revolution

DS game – Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl

Wii-to-DS communication feature – all DS Pokemon can be installed in the Wii game where they can participate in battles.

Wii game – Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Adventure Series (3 Japan exclusive WiiWare games)

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – the DS can be used as a controller instead of the Wiimote + Nunchuk combo. The touchscreen can also be used to trigger attacks.

Wii game – Puyo Puyo 7
DS game – Puyo Puyo 7
Wii-to-DS communication feature – Wii players can compete against DS players using online CrossPlay (which has been shut down many years ago).

Wii game – Shinakui Atama o Maru Kusuru: Kanzen Seiha Wii (Japan)

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – DS can be used as the controller for both the single player and multiplayer modes to submit hand drawn kanjis, enter math answers using a calculator interface, choose multiple choice answers, and there is even a simple drawing program that serves no purpose.

Wii game – Simple 2000 Series Wii Vol.1: The Table Game (Japan)

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – apparently the DS is used to play local card games but I kept getting error messages and would not work for me.

Wii game – Simple Wii Series Vol. 3: Ason de Wakaru – The Party Casino

DS game – none (DS hardware Download Play)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – Just like the Vol.1 entry listed above, I could not get this feature to work, but apparently each player can play using their DS (some games).

Wii game – Tales of Graces (J)
DS game – None (DS Download Play)
Wii-to-DS communication feature – The Kamenin Merchant! (Turtle Merchant) mini game can be downloaded to the DS. This mini game was also made available as a separate DSiWare title. Progress in this DS game can be pushed back into the Wii where items are rewarded.

Wii game – Ultimate Band

DS game – Ultimate Band

Wii-to-DS communication feature – DS player also plays a rhythm button tapping mini game that causes things to happen, like adjusting the light show or launch a flying saucer, as the Wii players are playing. Basically the DS player executes a glorified lighting show during the Wii performance.

Wii game – WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase (WiiWare)

DS game – WarioWare D.I.Y.

Wii-to-DS communication feature – micro games, comics, and music created in the DS game can be pushed to the Wii game and outfitted with motion controls. Wii content can also be installed on the DS cartridge.

Wii game – Wii Room (Japan)

DS game – Wii Room Anywhere (DSiWare)

Wii-to-DS communication feature – allowed for Wii Room videos, aka Wii no Ma, to be played on the DS.

Wii game – Zaidan Hōjin Nippon Kanji Nōryoku Kentei Kyōkai Kōnin: Kanken Wii Kanji Ō Ketteisen
