The Game Gear version of Mappy, which was exclusively released in Japan, features a 2-player versus mode when using the Gear-to-Gear link cable.
Unfortunately, this linked multiplayer mode is nothing more than a score chaser so it actually could have been implemented as a hot-seat option.
