Originally a late Super Famicom release, later ported to PS4 and Switch in 2021, Cotton 100% is now available on Xbox thanks to the efforts of Ratalaika, ININ, and Success.
For reference, pretty much everything mentioned in my PS4 Cotton 100% article also applies here so I don’t want to repeat myself too much.
In short, I am glad to see Cotton 100%, as well as Panorama Cotton, now available on Xbox and serves as a history lesson from 90s. Fans of Gradius will appreciate the 2D side-scrolling gameplay and the ability to choose a loadout which adds replay value. Granted, the magic/super attacks are not anything special and I find the typical machine gun-like fire to work the best in almost every circumstance.
Unfortunately, the lack of options is a little disappointing. Other than a rewind feature, there is no included historical context. No scans of the original instruction manual. No interview with the original developers. No way to switch between and old and new version. The Japanese text is still available but with English closed captioning posted under it so English speakers can follow the ridiculous narrative. Still definitely playable and enjoyable, it seems like a missed opportunity not to include any extra for the fans. The included Challenge mode doesn’t offer anything new either and feels like empty filler.
Even though there are some obvious short comings, it is still a Cotton game on Xbox which is something to be acknowledged and celebrated. It also a cause for excitement as it opens the door for future Xbox ports which were previously restricted to PC, PS4, and Switch previously.
