Originally released in 2009 on pretty much every system available at the time, Ghostbusters: The Video Game essentially acted as Ghostbusters 3 since a third movie was never made. Now, ten years later and released just in time for Halloween, how well does this last gen title hold up?
Well, it plays and looks like a last gen third-person shooter despite a higher resolution coat of paint in the visual department. The entire experience is designed as fan service since characters, monsters, and set pieces from the films make their way into this game in one form or another. Gameplay has the player visiting haunted environments and use the ghostbusting backpacks to weaken, destroy, or capture ghosts. Instead of reloading, the player needs to vent the pack before it overheats and use the proton gun to slam ghosts to the ground into a trap. Along the way, new weapons and upgrades will be introduced to the player so there is a welcomed, although not deep, RPG system in place. Optional collectables and a scanning system provides the player with extra incentive as well.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for the last gen mechanics to make their appearance. Environmental damage looks cheap, friendly AI is lacking and needs constant saving, and this Remastered version removes the only redeeming quality of the original – online co-op. Playing online with three friends is when this game actually has a high amount of entertainment value, especially for fans of the movies, so removing it for this Remaster is the biggest sin this game can make. Honestly, fans are better off tracking down a used 360/PS3 copy of the original release if you want to experience this fan favorite series from the 80s as the updated resolution is not a good substitute for multiplayer.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered isn’t necessarily a bad game, it just plays like an last gen title. When players have access to games like Gears 5, the Uncharted series, or even Fortnite, remastered games like Ghostbusters will best be enjoyed by dedicated fans.
