Master Maker 3D Ultimate (XSX) Review

A simple 3D platformer, Master Maker 3D Ultimate only costs five bucks, has a handful of easy, big point Achievements, but is horribly low quality.

All stage assets are composed of plain blocks which provides an intentional low-poly visual design. Which is fine. It is going for the retro-style theme.  However, the play control is inaccurate, sometimes the character just moves by himself, jumping is sporadic, and the lack of a checkpoint system only results in frustration. Like trying to control a wet fish out of water, the play control is broken, causing many unintentional deaths. The stage designs also are not great. When it is this easy to get frustrated, there just isn’t any fun to be had. Also, enemies barely move, and if they do, they might stupidly walk right off a cliff. Sometimes the player has to wait forever for the one moving platform to return too.

There is an option to make your own levels, but why? The play control still sucks, and stiff animations do not do the platforming any favors. The magic hammer, which can destroy blocks and return like a boomerang, is an attempt to bring fun and offensive capabilities to the player but is also inconsistent. First, the player needs to find, then collect the hammer to use it; the player doesn’t simple start with the hammer at the beginning of each stage. Then if you die, it will need to tediously be recollected each time. Also, there are dozens of coins to collect in each stage, but they literally do nothing. You cannot spend them. They do not earn an extra life. They are literally just there for show, which makes no sense.

The camera is also broken and floaty. So much so that the game gives you an option to lock the camera in place sort of like Mario 3D Land on 3DS, where it just follows the player from a fixed angle. Although this point of view makes platforming a little less stressful, it makes it impossible to see into the distance. Some stages have branching paths, so it is very possible to wind up going the wrong way, to collect coins that don’t do anything, and probably accidently fall down a pit on the way back due to the awful control.

Making matters worse, the one looping music track is annoying. Hilarious, in a bad way, the game’s announcer says things like “oh baby” and “you are a winner” when you reach the stage ending pole.

Unfortunately, Master Maker 3D Ultimate is easily one of the lowest quality games that EastAsiaSoft has ever published. Which is shocking because normally they release consistently higher quality stuff. Under no circumstance does this digital download come recommended.

SCORE: 2/10

Better Than: getting a root canal
